My name is Jarvis J. Claiborne, and I am a candidate for St. Landry Parish Judge for the 27th Judicial District Court, Division C. You may know me as the attorney whose office has stood along historic Main Street in Opelousas for almost 40 years. However, there is so much more to my story.

This community has been my support system since I was one of eight siblings growing up on Perry’s Lane in the Trash Pile area of Opelousas. Since then, St. Landry Parish has equipped me for 40 years of marriage and fatherhood; more than 35 years of coaching children and youth; and over 25 years of ministry.

As an attorney for nearly 40 years, I have handled virtually every type of case that comes before district court judges, including family law, successions, criminal law, collections, juvenile, and personal injury. I have also represented individuals who cannot afford attorneys as a public defender for almost 20 years.

Being an attorney has allowed me to give a voice to the men and women whom society tries to silence, as well as create second chances for those who have made mistakes.

While my legal experience demonstrates my competence, my heart for the community and faith in God illustrate my compassion.  It’s time to address the circumstances that lead people to the courtroom in the first place. I believe that many issues impacting the community can be mitigated through proactive measures. I intend to pursue grants and programs, such as veterans court and youth court, that offer constructive environments for these populations.

As a seasoned coach, I have seen my former athletes become leaders in their communities, families and workplaces. I know that people can and will change when given hope, opportunity and resources to grow.

As your next district court judge, I promise to be both firm and fair, and to deliver equal justice under the law. My faith requires me to seek truth, which means being independent, exercising judicial temperament, and factoring all the evidence into my decisions.

As a firm believer in servant leadership, I will be patient, open-minded, understanding, courteous, and humble toward all who appear before me in court.

Despite the challenges that continue to face our community, my faith in St. Landry Parish remains steadfast. I believe in this community, and I hope that you will put your faith in me on Election Day on October 14, 2023. Thank you for your support, and God bless.

Sincerely,

Jarvis J. Claiborne
